2023 Call for Award Submissions

The Midwestern History Association calls for nominations for its annual awards. All submissions must be either postmarked or emailed by March 31, 2024 for consideration. Prizes will be awarded in 2024 for work completed or published in 2023. Individual award pages will have information about each prize and submission procedures.

DEADLINE: March 31, 2024

The MHA presents five awards annually: the Jon Gjerde Prize for the best book on Midwestern history; the Dorothy Schwieder Prize for the best scholarly article on the Midwest; the Alice Smith Prize in Public History for a public history project that increases public awareness of and reflection upon the Midwest; the Hamlin Garland Prize in Popular History for a book or article-length piece on the Midwest written for a broad public audience; and the Frederick Jackson Turner Award, a lifetime achievement award for professional contributions to the advancement of the study of the Midwest. 

For purposes of these awards, “the Midwest” includes the twelve states of the region as defined by the US Census: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.
